LineGuage: Textual Imagery/Linear Allegory

  • 8th December 2018 to 5th April 2019
  • CCA, Lagos 8, McEwen Street, Sabo, Yaba Lagos-Nigeria

LineGuage is an exhibition that piqued my interest because I love to read books.

Curated by Iheanyi Onwuegbucha, LineGuage explores the direct relationship between Fine Art and Literature, the co-creation of images between African writers and artists. LineGuage features such artists as Bruce Onobrakpeya, Uche Okeke, and Ibrahim El-Salahi who were adept at the visual interpretation of literature. It also features the works of Victor Epkuk and Chijioke Onuora who gave illustrations to many of Chinua Achebe's literary works.

To further explore the relationship between art and literature, LineGuage invited 5 artists, whose work engages the idea of storytelling, to give a visual response to Kintu, a novel by Ugandan author Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi. These artists were myself (Amarachi Okafor), Odun Orimolade, Stacey Okparavero, Rahima Gambo, and Jess Atieno.

Featured in this exhibition is Chained in the Spirit, 2018
